Online Village in Bloom

The RHS has had to cancel this year’s Britain in Bloom contest as well as its various flower shows due to COVID-19. As I head out on my daily walk under social distancing guidelines, I often pause to admire my village’s colourful floral displays. It seems a pity that so much planning and hard work should go unappreciated. It strikes me if the Britain in Bloom judges and competitors cannot mix this year, competitors’ displays can still be shared online? Please find some of the wonderful local displays in this photo blog.

Our village In Bloom group was started by a group of volunteers in 2005. There are some 52 tubs planted throughout the seasons. There are areas of permanent sustainable planting and wildflowers. This is a true community effort with involvement from residents, businesses, clubs and Parish Council. Wedmore has won the Best Large Village category three times as the South West’s representative. Our RHS Britain In Bloom group has also won Gold and Silver-Gilt medals over the years.

The community seating areas are empty and the village appears deserted due to social distancing. If you take a photo, someone invariably and proudly calls out from the other side of the road or a nearby garden. Our enthusiastic gardeners continue unabated at a distance.

The local nursery is displaying a thank you banner to all the NHS workers on the Coronavirus frontline. Stay safe. Flowers give immense pleasure at troubled times. Please enjoy our village flowers safely online and share your displays with us.

While all humans are staying at home, Nature is enjoying a recovery. The birds are full of song. The pollinators are buzzing with relish.
